Wren 0.17 turns semantic context into something teams can move—not rebuild
The release adds OpenMetadata project import and Apache Ossie context exchange, while fixing several SQL and metadata correctness edges.
Wren 0.17.0 makes a practical bet about enterprise text-to-SQL: the semantic context around a model should be portable across tools instead of rebuilt by hand for each agent.
Catalog in, context out
The release adds a command to import a Wren project from an OpenMetadata catalog. It also adds Apache Ossie context import and export, following the project’s rename from OSI to Apache Ossie. Together, those changes create two migration paths: metadata can enter Wren from an existing catalog, and Wren’s context can move through an emerging interchange format.[^1]
That matters because enterprise NL2SQL systems depend on more than physical schemas. Relationships, business definitions and model structure are the material that turns a syntactically valid query into one that reflects the organization’s meaning. Wren’s release notes do not claim automatic parity between every source and destination, so teams should treat conversion as a reviewable build artifact rather than assume lossless interchange.[^1]
Wren reinforces that point with a related fix: an Ossie file that converts cleanly should now also validate, build and query. The useful deployment gate is therefore not “the converter exited successfully,” but whether the imported project survives validation and executes representative questions.[^1]
Correctness fixes reach the SQL boundary
Version 0.17.0 also fixes model aliases inside SQL query scopes and translation of dialect-neutral SQL that ClickHouse can reject or misread. Another fix preserves dates and integers in JSON output rather than changing their types. These are not headline AI features, but they sit directly on the path from semantic model to executable query to machine-consumed result.[^1]
The release also preserves dbt tests and relationships for quoted columns, serializes access to a shared DuckDB connection, and constrains the MCP SDK to its supported major version. For teams embedding Wren behind agents, those changes reduce three different classes of surprise: lost metadata during import, concurrency behavior at execution time, and dependency drift at the tool boundary.[^1]
A rollout checklist
Teams evaluating the release should test one OpenMetadata-backed project end to end: import it, inspect relationships and quoted identifiers, export and re-import the Ossie context, then run representative queries against ClickHouse and DuckDB. JSON-consuming clients should also verify that numeric and date types remain stable.[^1]
The larger signal is that semantic portability is becoming a product capability rather than a slide-deck aspiration. Wren 0.17.0 does not prove universal interchange, but it gives practitioners concrete commands—and concrete validation points—for moving context between a catalog, an NL2SQL layer and another context-aware system.[^1]
